Salcombe

Nestled on the banks of the Kingsbridge Estuary, the coastal town of Salcombe is one of the South Ham’s crown jewels and one of the most sought after coastal towns in the country. Surrounded by a backdrop of rolling South Hams countryside, stunning coastal scenery and an array of white sand beaches it comes as no surprise that Salcombe is the bustling, popular destination that it is.

Salcombe Estuary 

The Salcombe Estuary is one of the West Country’s premier sailing spots and boating, in its many forms, is one of the most popular pastimes amongst residents. As you would expect, life in Salcombe is very much focused on and around the water, and in the height of summer you will find the estuary a constant hub of activity. 

On dry land, keen walkers explore Bolt Head, nearby National Trust Overbecks, on the other side of the estuary, take the South West Coast Path to East Prawle and beyond. Salcombe is the perfect location for outdoor enthusiasts who really want to live a true coastal lifestyle.

The Salcombe Community

A honey pot of activity year round, the community is established and extremely inclusive. Given its waterside location, expect to find an active watersport scene. The Salcombe Yacht Club and Salcombe Estuary Rowing Club are popular with all ages, and local residents are forever grateful for the Salcombe RNLI. 

The town is home to a thriving Rugby Club, Arts Club, Maritime Museum, Rotary Club, two active churches, a gospel choir… the list is endless! The cobbled high street is peppered with boutique shops, fabulous restaurants and popular beach cafés nearby. Nearby amenities are comprehensive, and you will find a Post Office, library, doctors surgery, and dentist within the town. 

Two large local supermarkets and minor injuries hospital can be found in the nearby town of Kingsbridge.

Education

Salcombe Primary School and Malborough Primary School are both highly regarded, with ‘good’ OFSTED ratings. Kingsbridge Community College remains outstanding and a real draw for families coming into the area. 

For those with younger children, there is a pre-school within Salcombe itself, and in the nearby coastal village of Hope Cove you will find the outstanding Venture Outdoor beach and forest preschool facility.

Transport

Situated approximately 17 miles off the A38, Salcombe allows for ease of access to the Devon Expressway with links to Plymouth, Cornwall, Exeter, the M5. The nearest train stations are at Totnes (20 miles) or Plymouth (25 miles), both of which have regular trains to London Paddington and London Waterloo taking just over three hours. The closest city airport is at Exeter, 65 miles away.
