The twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo are referred to by many as a ‘slice of tranquillity’ and are nestled deep within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Situated just ten miles southeast of Plymouth, Newton and Noss enjoy a stunning riverside setting on the wooded slopes of the River Yealm. Divided by a creek, the waters provide a perfectly undisturbed natural harbour that enjoys thriving wildlife and is sometimes graced by pods of dolphins.
Widely known amongst the locals as ‘Newton’, Newton Ferrers is the largest of the twin villages and really packs a punch with regards to its doorstep amenities. Boasting a waterfront pub, a thriving sailing club, two village shops including a Co-op and Post Office, pharmacy, active church, primary school and wide range of social and sporting clubs and societies, there really is everything you need within close proximity.
Newton Ferrers lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Newton Creek is a narrow tidal inlet on the River Yealm that is perfect for exploring. Nearby, The Warren is a very attractive stretch of coastline with circular walking routes that take you out for the day, perhaps with a picnic or a rendezvous at sunset. For those that want to spend their time on (or in) the water, the River Yealm provides ideal conditions for swimming, kayaking, sailing, rowing and paddle boarding. If you’re a keen angler, the fishing is regarded as superb.
A real hidden gem to discover is the unspoilt Mothecombe Beach. Large, sheltered and ideal for a paddle or a swim, and sometimes, if conditions prevail a surf, Mothecombe is a private beach but is open to the public on Wednesdays and at weekends. The rock pools are a favourite with children looking for salty and curious creatures.
Newton Ferrers C of E Primary School was highly praised at their most recent Ofsted inspection. Also includes a pre-school. The majority of older students in the village attend Ivybridge Community College although some travel a little further to Plymouth, where a wide choice of schools is available, including Plymouth College and Plymouth High School for Girls. For preschoolers, there is also Venture Kitley Farm, an outstanding outdoor educational facility – one of their favourite sessions is the Friday beach school at Mothecombe!
The main route from Plymouth to Exeter (A38/M5 Devon Expressway) is only a few miles away, and you will find the village bus service conveniently runs to Plymouth city centre making this an easy commuting distance. Intercity trains run regularly from Plymouth to Paddington, and the Continental Ferry port in Plymouth is also easily accessible.
